Patient Instructions

You must cooperate fully in preparing yourself as outlined below. Follow directions exactly and take only the medication, food and water in the amounts and times shown. Follow your physician's directions regarding any medication that you are taking. Come to Outpatient/Admissions to get your preparations kits, if required.

Barium Enema

Exam Preparation:
One Day Preparation - Routine Barium Enema
                                       - IVP
Two Day Preparation - Barium Enema With Air Contrast

Two (2) Days Before Your Exam (Barium Enema With Air Contrast):
You must stay on a clear liquid diet. You can have any of the following liquids: grape juice, apple juice, clear soup, Jell-O without fruit, black coffee, plain tea. DO NOT drink any milk or cream. Drink one (1) quart of Gatorade™ during the day.

One Day Before Your Exam:
You must stay on a clear liquid diet. You can have any of the following liquids: grape juice, apple juice, clear soup, Jell-O without fruit, black coffee, plain tea. DO NOT drink any milk or cream. Drink one (1) quart of Gatorade™ during the day.

  • Breakfast   - Non-residue diet / no sugar or dairy products.
  • 9:00 a.m.   - Add the package of magnesium citrate to 8 oz. of cold water
                           in a clear glass. Stir and then drink after the fizzing stops.
  • 10:00 a.m. - Drink 8 oz. of water.
  • 11:00 a.m. - Drink 8 oz. of water.
  • 12.00 p.m.   (noon) - Have a liquid lunch (see above for examples).
  • 1:00 p.m.   - Take the four (4) orange Bisacodyl tablets with water - DO NOT CHEW
  • 2:00 p.m.   - Drink 8 oz. of water.
  • 3:00 p.m.   - Drink 8 oz. of water.
  • 4:00 p.m.   - Drink 8 oz. of water.
  • 5:00 p.m.   - Drink 8 oz. of water.
  • 6:00 p.m.   - Drink 8 oz. of water.
                        - You may drink additional water, if needed, until 10:00 p.m.

Morning of Exam:
DO NOT have anything to drink or eat. Use the enclosed suppository. Push it through the backing to remove it from the container, remove the foil wrapper and insert the suppository into the rectum.

Bronchoscopy

  • Please report one hour prior to your examination time.
  • DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your exam.
    An exception can be made for sips of water with prescribed medications.
  • Specific instruction will be given by your physician.


Cardiac Catheterization/Arteriogram

  • Please report one hour prior to your examination time.
  • Specific instruction will be given by your physician.

CT SCAN

Blood tests (PT/PTT, Creatinine & Platelets) should be done at your physician's office prior to the day of your scan. A patient history is expected when scheduling and, if possible, a phone number where the patient may be reached during the day. CT scans cannot be scheduled on the same day that any upper GI, Barium Swallow or Barium Enema examinations are to be performed.

Patient Preparations:

Brain:  No special preparation. Arrive 30 minutes early for a creatine test.
Spine: No special preparation. Bring any recent spinal films.
Lung:  No special preparation. Bring a recent chest x-ray, if possible
Abdomen/Pelvis:

 

AM Appointments - Eat a light supper. Chill the two (2) bottles of
                                   liquid (Readi-Cat 2) that you were given.
                                 - At 10:00 p.m., drink the first bottle of liquid
                                   (Readi-Cat 2) that was given by the Radiology
                                   Department.
                                 - DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight.
                                 - One (1) hour prior to your appointment, drink
                                   the second bottle of liquid (Readi-Cat 2) that
                                   you were given.
                                 - You will need to come to the patient registration
                                   area 30 minutes prior to your appointment time.
                               

Your exam will normally take about 1 hour. However, being in the hospital setting, at times we have emergency situations that must be dealt with immediately. We appreciate your patience and understanding. We will do our best to ensure that your test goes as quickly and smoothly as possible.

PM Appointments - Chill the two (2) bottles of liquid (Readi-Cat
                                   2) that you were given.
                                 - Eat a light breakfast around 7:00 a.m. or 7:30
                                   a.m. (Examples for breakfast: grits or toast
                                   with water, a little orange juice or a cup of coffee.
                                   Please - No - milk, oatmeal, eggs, or pancakes.)
                                 - DO NOT eat or drink anything after your first
                                   bottle of Readi-Cat 2.
                                 - One (1) hour prior to your appointment, drink
                                    the second bottle of liquid (Readi-Cat 2) that you were                                     given.  
                                 - You will need to come to the patient
                                    registration area 30 minutes prior to your appointment                                     time.

EEG

Standard EEG:

  • Wash hair the night before the test. Do not put any spray, gels or oils on hair before test.
  • ALL HAIRPIECES will need to be removed BEFORE your test.
  • Do not eat or drink anything with CAFFEINE on the day of your appointment.
  • Please try to arrive at the hospital 30 minutes prior to your appointment.
  • Bring any medications that you are taking with you.

Sleep Deprived EEG:

  • The night before your test - YOU MUST STAY AWAKE FROM MIDNIGHT UNTIL THE TIME OF YOUR APPOINTMENT.
  • Follow all other instructions listed above under standard EEG.

Glucose Tolerance:
The day before the test:

  • Eat a regular meal for supper.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight except water.

IVP

Low Dose Mammography

Park at the Medical Office Building located at 58 Hospital Road, adjacent to Piedmont Newnan Hospital and report to The Women's Diagnostic Center on the first floor.

Do not wear any perfumes, deodorant, or body talcs prior to the exam. Bring mammogram films taken elsewhere to your appointment.

MRI/Mylogram

These studies need to be scheduled.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your exam.
  • Patients may drink clear liquids the morning of the exam.

MRI needs no preparation unless risk factors exist. If you have any risk factors, please notify the MRI scheduling personnel.
- Claustrophobia
- Cardiac Pacemaker
- Cardiac Valve Prostheses with Ferromagnetic material
- Intracranial aneurysm clips
- Implants of any type
- Metal worker
- Pregnancy

Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine Department must have a physician's order with the patient's name, exam data, type of exam, and patient history prior to injection. All females between 13 and 55 years of age who suspect the possibility of pregnancy should consult their physician prior to scheduling a procedure.

Bone Scan
No special preparation. Patient is injected in early AM and returns in 3 to 5 hours for scan.

Gastric Empty
Patient must not eat or drink anything after midnight the day of the exam.

Hemangioma
Patient must not eat or drink anything after midnight the day of the exam and must be off any opiates, such as morphine or demerol, for at least 6 hours prior to the exam.

Hepatobiliary or Hida
Patient must not eat or drink anything after midnight the day of the exam and must be off any opiates, such as morphine or demerol, for at least 6 hours prior to the exam.

Liver/Spleen
Patient must not have had contrast studies within the last 4 days.

Meckel's
Patient must not have had contrast studies within the last 4 days.

Renal Scan
Patient should drink plenty of fluids prior to exam. If possible, schedule in AM.

Thallium or Sestamibi
Patient must not eat or drink anything after midnight the day of the exam. Patient must not have any caffeine or tobacco products the day of the exam. It is important to wear comfortable walking shoes. The Thallium stress test may take up to 5 hours to complete. The Sestamibi, or Cardiolite stress test will take 2 days to perform, about 2 hours each day.

Thyroid Scan
Patient must be off all thyroid medications for at least 4 weeks, have had no iodinated contrast studies within the last 4 months, and must not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to the exam. A 6 hour uptake is performed so the patient should be scheduled no later than 9:00 a.m.

No Special Preparation for the following:
GI Bleed, Lung Scan, MUGA Scan
